The Taekwondo Black Belt and What Happens in the First Moments of a Fight

For a Taekwdondo Black Belt, or a Kung Fu Black Belt or some other type of martial artist, the first seconds of an attempted mugging are not overwhelming. They don’t experience the shortness of breath, the heartstopping fear, or the desire to run. Instead, other things happen.

About Aikido, How To Make The Techniques More Street Ready

When I hear the uninformed speak about Aikido, it is generally a description of how the aikido techniques are graceful, or how they don’t work. This becomes the old disagreement, do you want form or function? This can further be understood as, do you want force or flow?

Aikido Power Based On One simple Physics Rule

Aikido Power, as anyone who has witnessed it can testify, is an amazing thing. You will see it in ki power demonstrations, or in any of the basic aikido throws. What amazes people is that the seeming complexity and majesty is all based on one, very simple, physics concept.

Baguazhang Kung Fu Energy Flux…How to Align It

Baguazhang Kung Fu is one of those exotic martial arts that stimulates the imagination. One hears incredible stories of what the old Baguazhang masters could do, and they want to do them, too. The sad truth, however, is that most Baguazhang schools are not training in the correct manner.

Watching Tai Chi Chuan on the youtube this morning, and it was interesting, very interesting. Young chinese gal swung into a modern Tai Chi New Age version, and my mind began to dissect the bits and pieces, the rights and wrongs. Morihei Ueshiba and the Five Evolutions of the Art of Aikido

The Art of Aikido was discovered and given to the world by Morihei Ueshiba. O Sensei (great teacher), as he is called was not an imposing physical figure in the beginning. He was sickly when he was a youngster, and somewhat flakey in his training efforts.

Aikido Introduction

Aikido is a Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba aka ‘O Sensei’ or ‘Great Teacher’. The martial art that had the most influence on Aikido is Daito-Ryu Aikijujutsu. Aikido consists mainly of joint locks and throws. Punching and kicking are taught not as the main technique but to compliment the technique. It is used as a distraction, to imbalance and weaken the attacker. Anyone can punch or kick, it takes skill to be able to apply techniques. Most martial arts consist mostly of punches and kicks, that not only hurts the attacker but that also hurts the practitioner. Aikido practitioners are taught ways to blend and redirect the opponents’ aggressive energy away from themselves and redirect it towards the aggressor. The attacker gets thrown resulting in minimal hurt to him and no hurt to the Aikido practitioner. Aikido is a compassionate and peace-loving, gentle yet effective martial arts that aims to protect not only the Aikido practitioner but even the attacker. In fact, Aikido is too gentle until it gets criticized for being ineffective and not practical in a real-life situation. My response to that is that the techniques people see in the dojo (Training hall) or in videos are just for training and practising with your fellow dojomates so too much force cannot be used. A lot of force and strength is controlled to avoid causing injury to each other whereas in a real-life situation, there is no need to control any force or strength.

Taking a Sword Away from an Attacker with a Martial Arts Technique

I have said that the Eight Catchers are the epitome of the Martial Arts. And, I have said that you should study extensive fighting disciplines, Karate, Tai Chi Chuan, Shaolin, whatever, before you begin your minimum of two years of practice on solely the Catchers. That said, here is a description of the Sword Catcher, which is an Aikido based technique, and images of it can be found in Monster Martial Arts newsletter X-5.

The Four Major Tai Chi Chuan Styles and the Men Who Founded Them

The Lineage of the various Tai Chi Chuan styles is sometime murky, sometimes easily seen. What is of high interest, however, is the way Tai Chi Chuan is altered by each generation of students. One would think that the principles would be true, and nothing should ever change, but change is the only constant in this world.
